FIfteen Horizon elementary fourth-graders, worked together December 6-8, 2023 to cut and tie fleece blankets for Project Warm-Up. The Horizon Blanket Making Club was sponsored by Thrivent Action Teams. Project Warm-Up is a non-profit organization that gives fleece blankets to people in need. Started by Kaitlin Vik of the Lincoln Key Club and Tracy Vik, of the Diversity Kiwanis Club, Project Warm-Up has grown to making thousands of blankets for individuals who are facing tough times by hundreds of volunteers. They have donated to the unhoused, victims of fire, or people in situations who need a bit of warmth.
Horizon learners worked alongside fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Tonda Kirton, throughout their recess break. About half had not previously made a blanket prior to this event. What a perfect way to learn a new skill while helping others. In total 11 blankets were made and will be given to Project Warm-Up.
