Drama club, a wonderful activity for many, is one of the choices of clubs offered at Harrisburg High School. The club offers a variety of roles for its members. Many of its members have even described the experience as life changing. Rylin Yerdon, secretary of the drama club, noted, “Drama club has given me a safe place to call home. Our theatre department is a place free of judgement, where everyone can come together to express themselves.” This has been a popular answer among those who participate in all drama activities.
Although some may say they don’t have the right talents and skill sets for drama club, there are many roles available for people of all types of talents, interests, and abilities. Roles like secretary, president, and vice-president are all a part of the club, and when it comes to performances, there are roles for actresses, actors, stage crew, and tech. With the help of Amanda Berg and Michael Smith to lead, direct, and inspire, drama club could be a great choice for many HHS students.
This year, the drama club’s experience has been a little bit different because of the pandemic. Trying to avoid any outbreaks, many changes have been made to the club’s daily affairs. Masks are now required for practice, which can make it difficult to act, hear, and create facial expressions. Changing the shows, the club has some key differences from the previous years. In a normal year, there are three to four formal performances; however, this year there are eight smaller scale productions. Each mini performance takes about 1-2 weeks to prepare, practice, and perfect. Although life in drama club has been a little different this year, the people and memories stay the same.
