In schools across the country—and here in our own community—Unified Basketball is creating meaningful connections. This program brings together students with and without intellectual disabilities to play on the same team, working toward a shared goal on the court.
Last night, the HHS Unified Basketball team played their first game at Washington High School. The Tigers faced the Warriors with 8 athletes and 10 buddies competing together.
Unified Basketball is about more than sports. It builds friendships and understanding as students of all abilities learn, compete, and support one another as teammates. It’s about connection, not competition.
Sarah Parmenter, HSD Assistant Director of Special Education and mother of a team member, shared, "What an incredible event! The joy and excitement were evident in every smile, as players and fans alike were fully engaged. The energy in the crowd was electric, with everyone celebrating the students' enthusiasm and the unwavering support from our buddies."
Through practices, games, and team time, students build leadership, communication, and trust. More importantly, they experience belonging.
Unified Basketball shows the power of inclusion in action. We’re proud to support this program and the students who make it special. Thank you to Coach Ryan Beier and Mesa Groen for making it happen. We are #TigerProud! 🐾
